Scénario: Building a 24 ft long by 3 ft high residential landscape retaining wall using standard 16 in × 8 in × 12 in blocks, 1 buried base course, 6" crushed base, 12" drainage rock backfill, and an 8% cutting buffer.
Calculate Courses: Exposed height = 3 ft (5 courses @ 8"). Adding 1 buried course = 6 total courses (4.0 ft total block height).
Compute Blocks per Course: 24 ft ÷ (16 in ÷ 12) = 24 ÷ 1.333 ft = 18 blocks per course.
Calculate Net Blocks: 6 courses × 18 blocks = 108 blocks.
Add 8% Cutting & Breakage Buffer: 108 × 1.08 = 116.64 ⟹ 117 blocks to order.
Calculate Base Gravel: 24 ft × 1.5 ft × 0.5 ft = 18 cu ft ⟹ (18 ÷ 27) × 1.10 = 0.73 cu yd (~1.03 Tons).
Calculate Drainage Rock: 24 ft × 1.0 ft × (4.0 - 0.5) ft = 84 cu ft ⟹ (84 ÷ 27) × 1.05 = 3.27 cu yd (~4.41 Tons).
Estimate Material Cost: (117 blocks × $4.50) + ((0.73 + 3.27 yd³) × $45.00) = $526.50 + $180.00 = $706.50.
Retaining Wall Block & Aggregate Formula
Total Blocks = ⌈(Courses × Blocks per Course) × (1 + Waste %)⌉ Total wall height equals exposed height plus buried foundation courses. The number of horizontal courses is determined by dividing total height by block height. Blocks per course is calculated by dividing wall length by block face length. Multiplying courses by blocks per course and adding an 8% to 10% cutting and corner buffer yields the total block count. Base gravel and drainage rock volumes are computed from trench and backfill geometric volumes factoring in compaction rates.

How many retaining wall blocks do I need?
To find out how many blocks you need, determine your total wall height (including at least one buried foundation course), divide by your block height to get total courses, and divide your wall length by block length to find blocks per course. Multiply courses by blocks per course, then add an 8% to 10% cutting and corner buffer.
Why do I need to bury the first course of retaining wall blocks?
Burying the bottom course below finished grade locks the wall into the earth (providing passive earth resistance at the toe), preventing the base from kicking out under the tremendous lateral soil pressure behind the wall.
How much gravel is required under and behind a retaining wall?
A solid retaining wall requires a minimum 6-inch deep compacted crushed stone leveling pad beneath the bottom course (extending 3 inches in front and behind), plus a minimum 12-inch wide column of 3/4-inch washed clear crushed stone directly behind the blocks.
Why is drainage aggregate and perforated pipe essential behind a wall?
Water is the #1 cause of retaining wall failure. Hydrostatic pressure from trapped water adds immense weight against wall blocks. Clean 3/4" crushed drainage stone and a perforated drain pipe routed to daylight allow water to freely drain away before exerting lateral force.
When does a retaining wall require structural engineering and permits?
Under the International Building Code (IBC Section 1807.2), retaining walls measuring 4 feet (1.2 meters) or higher from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall typically require engineering drawings and municipal building permits.
What is geogrid and when do I need to install it?
Geogrid is a high-strength geosynthetic polymer mesh rolled horizontally between block courses and extending back into compacted soil. It mechanically ties the wall face to the reinforced soil mass behind it, and is generally required for walls over 3 to 4 feet tall or on slopes.
