Scénario: Laying a 2-inch sand bedding layer for a 16 ft by 12 ft patio base (192 sq ft) using coarse concrete sand with a 10% compaction buffer.
Calculate Surface Area: 16 ft × 12 ft = 192 sq ft.
Convert Depth to Feet: 2 inches ÷ 12 = 0.1667 ft.
Compute Net Volume: 192 sq ft × 0.1667 ft = 32 cubic feet.
Add 10% Compaction & Settling Buffer: 32 cu ft × 1.10 = 35.2 cubic feet.
Convert to Cubic Yards: 35.2 cu ft ÷ 27 = 1.30 cubic yards.
Calculate Estimated Weight: 1.30 cu yd × 1.35 tons/cu yd = 1.76 Tons (3,520 lbs).
Determine 50 lb Bag Equivalent: 3,520 lbs ÷ 50 lbs per bag = 71 bags.
Sand Volume & Weight Formula
Volume = Surface Area × Depth × (1 + Compaction Buffer %) Surface area is calculated according to the selected geometry (Length × Width for rectangular bases, π × Radius² for round pools/sandboxes, or 0.5 × Base × Height for triangular areas). Multiplying surface area by sand layer depth yields the geometric uncompacted volume. A compaction and settling reserve (default 10%) is added to account for tamping and moisture settling.

How much sand do I need for my project?
To calculate the sand needed, multiply the area length (ft) by width (ft) by depth (in feet), then divide by 27 to find cubic yards. For example, a 10x10 ft patio area (100 sq ft) with a 1-inch sand depth requires 8.33 cubic feet (0.31 cubic yards). Adding a 10% settling reserve gives approximately 0.34 cubic yards.

How deep should sand be for paver bedding?
According to ICPI industry standards, paver bedding sand should be a uniform 1 inch (2.5 cm) thick. Do not use more than 1.5 inches of sand, as thick sand beds cause pavers to shift and create uneven ruts over time.
How much sand is needed under an above-ground pool?
Above-ground pool installations typically require a 2 to 3-inch layer of clean mason sand across the entire base to protect the vinyl liner from sharp rocks and punctures. A 2-inch sand cove should also be built around the inside bottom rim.
How many 50 lb bags of sand are in a cubic yard?
One cubic yard of sand weighs roughly 2,700 lbs. Dividing by 50 lbs per bag gives 54 bags of 50-lb sand per cubic yard. For 0.5-cubic-foot bags, you will need 54 bags to equal 27 cubic feet.
What is the difference between concrete sand and mason sand?

For small sandboxes or minor touch-ups under 1 to 1.5 cubic yards (under 40 to 60 bags of 50 lbs), retail bags are easy to transport in a personal vehicle. For projects requiring 2 or more cubic yards, bulk truckload delivery from a local landscape supplier or quarry is typically 40% to 60% less expensive.
