To find out how much sod you need, calculate your lawn's total square footage (Length × Width in feet), then add 5% to 10% for cutting waste and irregular borders. Divide your total adjusted square footage by your sod roll size (usually 10 sq ft) to find the number of rolls.

Break the irregular yard into geometric sections: rectangles, triangles, and half-circles. Calculate each section's square footage separately, add them together, and add a 10% to 15% cutting buffer to account for curved edges and trimming around trees.

A standard pallet holds 450 to 500 square feet of sod, which equals 45 to 50 standard rolls (10 sq ft each). Pallet capacity can vary slightly depending on grass variety and soil moisture at harvest.

Order 5% extra sod for open rectangular yards with few obstacles. Order 10% to 15% extra for lawns with curved garden beds, walkways, trees, or diagonal slopes where pieces must be trimmed to fit.

Sod typically costs between $0.35 and $0.85 per square foot ($160 to $400 per 450 sq ft pallet) for the turf material alone, depending on grass species (Bermuda, Kentucky Bluegrass, Zoysia, St. Augustine, or Fescue). Professional installation usually adds $0.50 to $1.20 per sq ft.

Install fresh sod on the day of delivery, ideally within 24 hours (and no later than 48 hours in cool weather). Palletized sod generates internal heat from living plant respiration and will yellow and suffer root death if left stacked.

For cool-season grasses (Kentucky Bluegrass, Fescue, Ryegrass), early autumn and spring are ideal. For warm-season grasses (Bermuda, Zoysia, St. Augustine), late spring to early summer provides the warmest soil temperatures for rapid rooting.
