Paver Calculator
Planning a paver patio, brick walkway, or driveway? Our free Paver Calculator estimates your exact paver count, base gravel volume, bedding sand requirements, polymeric joint sand bags, and perimeter edge restraints. Factoring in paver dimensions, joint widths, and cutting waste allowances, you will know precisely what materials to order for a long-lasting installation.

Step-by-Step Calculation Example
Scenario: Installing a 20 ft by 15 ft rectangular patio (300 sq ft) using standard 8x4 inch pavers with 1/8-inch joints, a 4-inch gravel base, 1-inch bedding sand, and a 10% cutting waste factor.
Calculate Patio Area: 20 ft × 15 ft = 300 sq ft.
Calculate Effective Paver Area: (8 + 0.125) in × (4 + 0.125) in = 33.52 sq in ÷ 144 = 0.2327 sq ft.
Compute Net Pavers: 300 sq ft ÷ 0.2327 sq ft = 1,289 pavers.
Add 10% Cutting Waste: 1,289 × 1.10 = 1,418 pavers.
Calculate Sub-base Gravel: 300 sq ft × (4 ÷ 12) ft × 1.10 = 110 cu ft ÷ 27 = 4.07 cubic yards (5.70 Tons).
Calculate Bedding Sand: 300 sq ft × (1 ÷ 12) ft × 1.05 = 26.25 cu ft ÷ 27 = 0.97 cubic yards (1.31 Tons).
Calculate Edge Restraints: Perimeter = 2 × (20 + 15) = 70 linear feet.
Paver Material & Base Volume Formula
Total Pavers = ⌈(Project Area ÷ Single Paver Area) × (1 + Waste %)⌉ Project area is calculated according to the chosen geometry. Single paver area includes the joint spacing allowance on all sides. Dividing project area by the effective paver area gives the net paver count. A cutting waste allowance (typically 10% for running bond, 12-15% for herringbone or curved edges) is added to account for border cuts and perimeter trimming.
Formula Variables
Calculation Assumptions
- Standard pedestrian patios and walkways require a minimum 4-inch compacted gravel base (Class 5 or crushed road base).
- Driveways and heavy vehicular surfaces require a 6 to 8-inch compacted gravel base.
- Bedding sand layer must be a uniform 1 inch of uncompacted coarse concrete sand (ASTM C33).
- Compacted crushed gravel weighs approximately 1.4 tons per cubic yard (1.65 tonnes per cubic meter).
- Coarse bedding sand weighs approximately 1.35 tons per cubic yard (1.55 tonnes per cubic meter).
- One 50 lb bag of polymeric joint sand covers approximately 75 to 100 square feet of standard paver joints.
Frequently Asked Questions
Common homeowner and DIY questionsPaver Calculator
How many pavers do I need for my patio or walkway?
To calculate paver quantities, calculate your total project square footage and divide by the square footage of a single paver (including joint spacing). For example, a 10x10 ft patio (100 sq ft) using 4x8 inch pavers (0.222 sq ft each) requires 450 pavers net, or approximately 495 pavers with a 10% cutting allowance.
How much extra should I order for cutting waste?
For simple rectangular patios laid in a running bond or stack bond, add 10% waste. For 45-degree herringbone patterns, circular patios, or walkways with winding curves, order 12% to 15% extra to account for angled edge cuts.
How deep should the base gravel be under pavers?
For pedestrian walkways, garden paths, and residential patios, standard depth is 4 inches of compacted crushed gravel base. For driveways and vehicular surfaces, a minimum 6 to 8-inch compacted gravel base is required to prevent rutting and settling.
How much bedding sand do I need under pavers?
Apply a uniform 1-inch (2.5 cm) layer of coarse washed concrete sand (ASTM C33) directly over the compacted gravel base. Never exceed 1.5 inches of sand, as excessive sand depth causes pavers to shift and ripple under foot traffic.
What is polymeric joint sand and how much do I need?
Polymeric sand is a blend of fine sand and chemical binders that hardens when activated with water. It locks pavers together, resists erosion, and prevents weed growth and ant infestations. One 50 lb bag covers approximately 75 to 100 square feet.
Are edge restraints necessary for paver installations?
Yes, edge restraints (such as rigid plastic snap-edge or concrete troweled berms) are critical. Without edge restraints, lateral foot traffic and freeze-thaw cycles push the perimeter pavers outward, causing the entire patio surface to spread and gap.
How do I calculate pavers for a circular patio?
For a circular patio, calculate area using Area = π × (Diameter ÷ 2)². Multiply the radius by itself and by 3.14159. For example, a 12 ft diameter firepit patio has an area of roughly 113.1 sq ft. When buying standard pavers for circular designs, add at least 15% extra for curved cuts.
